This book is useful to a certain extent if you have younger children and you don’t know where to start.I first bought the older version with my first child trying to figure out which schools we should consider. Now with our second, and with newer version we find the information very subjective and questionable now that we have more experience visiting different schools and speaking to reps and students from different schools.I suggest you look at all of the rankings in this book as simply an opinion of this author and his group and get other references and opinions as most of them, unless they specifically reference them, it is just that, someone’s opinion that may or may not be true to you.And even though it is newer edition, it already feels outdated since the percentage and type of students applying and being admitted dramatically changed this past couple of years and this book does not and couldn’t have reflected them.I personally recommend Princeton’s Review the Best #Colleges to obtain just the facts and stats that are not as subjective and are useful by school.
This book has been updated to a 2017 version.This book is an outstanding complement to any other college guide out there. It is _not_ a simple listing of colleges and their features. Rather it is a collection of "lists", where each list has a theme: underpriced colleges, colleges where flip flops rule, colleges with a conservative student culture, etc. It is the only book that attempts to capture some of the feel you would get only with an actual college visit (or talking with alumni). It's the single best resource for building your initial list of colleges, and in fact is a very useful resource for then refining that list down.
I purchased the newer edition to use in my practice, and I am grateful that I kept the older (third) edition. New version has a totally useless index, no way to search the lists provided in a meaningful manner. The list index is non-existent, and is not even organized ALPHABETICALLY. Don't buy this one; get (or keep) the third edition. Data may be dated, but it is easier to research updates than to use the new book. TERRIBLE!
The college advising guru has provided a good foundation for new comers to the field. Hope Antonoff can revise the book more regularly to keep the content more up-to-date.
