I know were in a digital age but they should never stop making these. I'm an appraiser and have been using the Thomas guide for over 30 years in naming my files so it's easy to locate other reports I might be able to use as a template for a new assignment. The local MLS systems have retired the Thomas Guide filed but FNMA reports still require map reference. I was freaking out for a while because I had to do a whole new naming convention for my files and it took twice as long to locate a template. It dawned on me that maybe there were still Thomas Guides available on Amazon and thank god there are. My efficiency has increased again and stress levels has been significantly reduced!!!!

It is well made and easy to use. Having the city divided among many pages makes it difficult to get the big picture, but that's the nature of big cities. I highly recommend it.

Received in a timely manner. My husband had an old issue, so thought I would surprise him with the 2016 version - he loved it. He's almost 80 and still has trouble using his i-phone and finds it easier to look up his garage sale or yard sale addresses using the Thomas Guide book.

My Auntie was bemoaning the lack of "real" maps anymore--got her this and she was THRILLED!

I need a map book I can mark up for my occupation and Thomas Bros were great. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. I wish it wasnt so.

Thomas Brothers maps are always awesome, and I won't be without a paper map due to the errors in electronic navigation systems.

I was looking everywhere for one of these. Went to a handful of stores and they seemed to not even know what I was talking about. Super happy to have found it on here. I enjoy using this "old school" map.

Edward Shorter provides a much need perspective on the current crop of psychosomatic symptoms that are being treated today as if they are based on structural anomalies in the knee, shoulder, lower back etc. etc. Shorter shows how these same kind of symptoms occurred in the late 18th century and the 19th too because of the proliferation of fanciful medical theories, like spinal irritation and reflex neurosis, that allowed patients to come up with symptoms that matched contemporary medical theories that were, in many cases, pure quackery and fanciful speculation with high sounding academic names. The question the reader begins to ask after reading Shorter is whether such modern diagnoses as spinal degeneration to account for back pain are really much more clinically scientific than the theories about the origins of back pain proposed by the medical establishment in the 1830s.A very insightful work of medical theory that forces the reader to ask the disturbing question: Just how far has clinical medicine advanced since the early Victorians? Disturbing when you begin to notice how so many of these aches and pains are confined to a specific middle-class milieu where patients have sufficient funds and leisure time to be treated for symptoms of diseases without germs.

Along with Sarno's "The Divided Mind", this is one of the most important books I have read in my life. It persuaded me that my 9 years of struggle with chronic fatigue (some prefer Myalgic Encephamolyelitis) could come to an end. It enabled me to glimpse how one's personality type interacts with culture and with contemporary beliefs and attitudes to shape the expression of one's suffering. I must credit one more person here: the Dutch researcher Hans Knoop, whose research articles and methods also contributed to the "inner shift".The book is easy to read and perhaps my background made it easy to understand too. As Sarno says, psychosomatic illness is real and it affects all of us. I wish I had known this years ago but perhaps like so many others, I might not have found the insights in this book palatable back then. A word of advice if you suffer from chronic fatigue: let go of your anger when you read this book. I find that anger is one of the most common obstacles to recovery.

Too bad this isn't required reading for all doctors!! Hardly anybody believes this stuff - but it goes on all around us resulting in millions of people hooked on pain pills or getting needless operations.

This book has 100 pages of sources and notes, some of them dating back to publications from the 1700s. It's truly a fantastic contribution to psychiatric history. That there is the trolling camp out there of "Myalgic Encephalomyelitis" that 1-star bombs all books that make any mention of the Fact that people can (obviously) contribute to their own fatigue, is unfortunate. Amazing how much energy they have to leave these reviews on literally every book in this field...

The author has successfully applied an historian's long range perspective to currents fads and trends in health care. His view will save us from the laughter of our grandchildren and perhaps keep us and them from making the same mistakes over and over. This is history that is useful today. History as a prescription for todays ills.

This is a very well researched book which is also very easy and pleasant to read. The author has scoured libraries for contemporary accounts of psychosomatic illness, mostly from physicians but sometimes from patients as well.Shorter describes the history of psychosomatic illness from the first written accounts up to the present day. In doing so he shows how theories have changed over the centuries, and also how the symptoms themselves have changed as patients unconsciously "choose" which symptoms will be believed (although I have my doubts about whether or not this is actually the case).The book contains many accounts of psychosomatic illness, some of which are quite entertaining (although probably not for the patients themselves).My only criticism of the book is the lack of science. Shorter doesn't try to give any theories about the nature of psychosomatic illness and seems to think that all psychosomatic symptoms are simply generated by the unconscious mind, which can change them at will. This seems to go against known physiology, which shows that certain psychosomatic reactions (such as the defecation response to fear) are hard-wired into the nervous system and happen in animals as well as humans. Perhaps there are different types of psychosomatic illness with different causes and different physiology, but Shorter doesn't address this. While this isn't a major shortcoming for a book that only professes to discuss the history of psychosomatic illness, Shorter does give the impression of having a mildly negative opinion of the "somatizers" he describes.Overall, however, it is a very good read and I couldn't put it down. For anyone at all interested in psychosomatic illness this book is a must-have.

Fascinating....Loveless was a modern master and I've looked at his knives for years. Finally got around (and the $) to being able to buy a few - and they are wonderful! The book therefore is extremely helpful especially for collectors. Not sure you will be able to actually build a knife, since like many books of this sort, they gloss over the fact that you have to be an expert mechanic /artist in the first place....I'm not gonna make any knives, but I truly got a better understanding of how knives are made, what is the process, what goes into them. The photographs were excellent too. Well worth the money.

This is a great book about Bob Loveless, and a really good book about how knives are made. I bought it because I wanted the data on how to make knives, which is where the 4 of 5 stars came from.

I love Bob and his work! This book is a great book if you want to know more about the way Bob makes his knives. One thing I do not like about this book is the fact that the editor or writer have no clue about knives. There are so money type-o' that it is a bit irritating. Like in one photo the author is describing a knife and say's it has a nice wooden handle when in fact it is Micarta and not wood. Other than these little things this is s great book!

The book covered Bob Loveless throughout his knife making years. I was written well. I liked the way Loveless was more about making a good knife than a show piece.

This is the catalogue for a beautiful exhibition held at the Met last year. The paintings reproduced here are among the best examples of the New Objectivity, a movement that was able to depict the atmosphere, the soul, the world of the Weimar Republic, that brief time span when pre-war Germany enjoyed freedom in the arts and in the minds. These gripping paintings show how ultimately doomed that world was and how the artists were the first to sense the tragic developments that were to succeed it. The front cover, a detail of one of Christian Schad's best known paintings, is a perfect illustration of a society that seems to have enjoyed life knowing that death would come too soon, with the end of that joyful and poetic decadence that was the Berlin of the 1920's.

Finally an excellent review of what the first World War did to German culture and psyche. This book lays it all out. Hitler was a logical consequence. Unfortunately the Western world did not pay enough attention to these portentious signs. The book has beautiful color reproductions, great detailed commentary on each artist featured and enaough historical commentary to make it all plausible.

The actual exhibit at the Met was good (although I thought it'd be bigger) and relatively informative, but the book gets into depths the exhibit couldn't. Ideally you should see the exhibit and then read this book. You can't quite get the experience of seeing the works within the book, and you can't exactly get the knowledge of just reading the little blurbs that are glued beside each piece in the exhibit.The book explores the themes of German life before the world turned on itself and the second world war exploded. For the money it's worth the dive into the weird and fascinating world of German Expressionism.

I would highly recommend this book for History Buffs and anyone who enjoys innovative German art from the 1920's-30's. Ample background is presented about the circumstances that engendered the creation of these works. The works themselves are astounding. This is a book I will read much more than once.

This is an amazing art book about the German underworld in the 1920s before the reign of Hitler during the fall of the Weimar Republic after World War I. This book contains mainly dark and disturbing art pieces that are featured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through February 2007. Very interesting to read about and it basically sums up the entire collection and more that are featured at the MET. Great book... not for the squimish. This book is really very dark and it does tell the true story of Germany during the 20s.

Twice viewed the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum here in New York. German art in the 20s is raw, obscene and decadent. A raucus reflection on hard times there. They had just suffered WW1, in the midst of fascism, insane inflation, etc. Highlight: Otto Dix is a wild artist, forever a favorite now. Also a DaDa artist.I am a frequent art museum visitor. Therefore, in my opinion, this catalogue did the show great justice which is not aways the case.

David Rhoads’ book, Mark as Story: an Introduction to the Narrative of a Gospel takes an unique approach to the Gospel of Mark through what the book calls “narrative analysis.” What Rhoads does in his book is to contextualize not only the historical and social context of the writing of Mark’s gospel account, but also the narrative writing of Mark’s author. Rhoads makes it plain that his approach analyses Mark as a story, rather than an historic accounting of Jesus’ life by Mark’s author. Rhoads examines storytelling culture in first century Mediterranean culture, which he notes was primarily done by oral composition. The Gospel of Mark, he argues, is not only intended to be read, but also performed. By this, Rhoads means that the story told in Mark was to be told in a “lively and meaningful” way. In this sense, Mark is filled with all the necessary attributes of storytelling such as tone, voice, volume, body language, etc, all designed to evoke a response from its intended audience. The meat of Rhoads’ book include sections on the narrator, the settings, the plot and the characters of Jesus, the disciples and other characters secondary to the story within Mark. In all these sections, Rhoads argues that there is a storytelling intent to everything about the Gospel of Mark; a narrator who tells the story as well as its first writer, settings designed to place the story in a time, place and culture, and a plot that twists and turns to climax in the death of Jesus of Nazareth, and dynamic characters existing with purpose within the story. Rhoads concludes with a section on the audience; how it was read two thousand years ago and to whom it was read and how it may be read by contemporary readers today. There are aspects of Rhoads’ book on which I whole-heartedly agree. His narrative analysis reinvigorates the text of Mark’s gospel account, giving it life that for myself and other readers of Mark may not have been there before. We tend to read the gospel accounts as mere history, which for bible believing Christians is true, but we also believe that the Holy Spirit used each author in a unique way, leaving marks of their personality, passions, and style all throughout the text of scripture.Rhoads points out that everything from the pace of the story, to the characters and their dimensionality is absolutely intentional on the part of the author. In this way, everything about Mark’s gospel can be understood as purposeful, not just by the author, but by the Holy Spirit himself. It is fascinating to look at Mark through that lense. There is nothing nonsensical about understanding all of Mark to be written with careful detail and purpose. In fact, backed with a biblical theology, the author’s intentional and purposed writing, coupled with God’s sovereignty truly attest to the beauty of not just Mark, but of all the gospel accounts and the rest of scripture.There are many things in which I disagree with in this book, however I will highlight only two of them. The first is that I’m not quite sold on the performance part where Rhoads suggest that the proper context of Mark was for the to reader perform and “act out all the characters.” I accept the purposefulness in the story writing of Mark and I also affirm that it necessarily was read out loud to illiterate Christians in the early church, but I find it a stretch to say that it was to be “performed.” Not only is there no early church evidence of this being the case, but the Christian tradition of preaching has been remarkably well preserved over two thousand years, taking direction from Jesus, the Apostles and early church fathers. It would make sense that if the “performing” of Mark’s gospel were to be truly intended and practiced in the early church, then it is likely that this would be preserved in some manner to this day. Thus, it is a bit too far to suggest that the writer of Mark intended his account to be performed like a dramatic story around a campfire or on a stage.The second issue I take with Rhoads is the imposition of his presupposed theological views onto Mark. At times it felt like Rhoads and I were not reading the same Mark. Rhoads states in his book that Jesus “becomes God’s son at his baptism,” and that he had no divine nature. He even seems to manipulate his translation of Mark to imply just that by changing Mark 1:11 from “You are my beloved son; with you I am well pleased.” to “You are my beloved son. I delighted choosing you.” Every honest Bible translation has translated Mark 1:11 in some manner of the former; Rhoads’ personal translation appears to be intentionally translated as the latter, most likely to accommodate his own theological views of Christ not being a divine member of the trinity. In another passage, Rhoads draws a conclusion that Jesus’ death as depicted in Mark is merely to show human faithfulness to God, when in reality Jesus’ death as detailed in Mark shows God’s faithfulness to a broken and sinful people. In many ways, Rhoads’ distorted theology plays into a misunderstanding of the fundamental nature of Mark’s gospel: to proclaim Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and the ushering in of God’s kingdom. Mark as Story is a good book for the seasoned Christian, firmly founded in biblical theology. Any new believer, or immature Christian should stay away from this book for they would be treading into waters too deep and rough for their stage in spiritual life. That being said and the bad theology aside, there is much that a mature and equipped follower of Christ can glean from Rhoads’ book. Namely a fresh way to look at the scriptures which can give some insight as to how Mark’s gospel was not only written, but masterfully crafted to tell the story of Jesus Christ and the good news he brought with him.

Using the method of “narrative criticism”, the authors make clear, in simple and direct language, what the “good news” meant for Mark and the communities he was writing for.As a non-Christian, this book really helped me get my head around the concept of “the rule (kingdom) of God” and how some people in the 1st century understood Jesus’ role (and those who followed his teachings) in the “kingdom’s” realization on Earth.As for the book as a whole, preeminent New Testament scholar Mark Allan Powell writes in the Afterword:“What Rhoads and Michie’s Mark as Story accomplished better than any other book of which I am aware is simply this: it explains what happens in the story (the plot, the characters, the settings) and how the story is told (the tone, the rhetoric, and the role of the narrator). It reveals the basic meaning of the Gospel of Mark in a manner that corresponds quite closely to what most people, most of the time, mean when they talk about “the meaning of a story.””I highly recommend this book.

In giving my evaluation of Mark As Story, I will begin with my general reaction; then, I will discuss one of the main catalysts of thought. By the end of the book, I gained a better understanding of the "story world" concept and the wording "rule of God." Mark As Story is now, perhaps, one of my favorite books, which is largely the result of my favorite chapters: the conclusion, which analyzes the audience and its role, and the epilogue, "Reading as a Dialogue: the Ethics of Reading." After reading these chapters and reflecting on the preceding chapters, I have realized that I concur with the interpretive method of the authors. The approach they posit reminds me of the theological interpretation that is the subject of Joel Green's Practicing Theological Interpretation. It also seems to provide a median between the historical-critical approach and the "devotional" approach. I also concur with their purpose in writing the book--enhancing "the experience of the story as story" and the ability of the story to transform the audience (8). Mark as Story maintains the integrity of the text, attempting to provide an accurate interpretation and analysis of Mark without jettisoning the authority of the text or its "theology."For the extended review check out Christ My Redeemer at Wordpress.

Very disappointed. Do NOT buy the Classic Reprint Series of this book, it is nothing more than a poor quality scan of each page of the original book. The pages are not straight nor do the even fill the page. Pictures are dark, text is unclear. Not worth the paper it is printed on, will be sending it back.

I couldn't believe it when I saw that this cookbook was available as a "new" book (authentic reproduction) again. I received it - probably as a birthday gift? I don't remember - when I was a young child, about 50 years ago. I have always been a cookbook reader, and I spent many happy hours as a child reading this book. So when I saw that it was available again, I eagerly bought a copy for the sake of nostalgia.As an object of nostalgia, I would rate it 5 stars. It looks exactly like the original, and has the same durable and convenient hardcover spiral binding that I remember. Although if you look carefully, you can tell that the cover is from a "photo of a photo," as the image isn't quite as crisp as an original would be. Also, the green glossy material used on the inside of the front & back covers was not in the original. However, everything else about the book is a perfect reproduction.As a 21st-century cookbook for children to use, I'd probably give it only 3 stars. There is a lot about cooking that has changed in the 60 years since this book was first published:* Our understanding of nutrition has improved significantly* We encounter a greater variety of ingredients, especially fresh produce, in our stores* Our food landscape has been enriched by many contributions from nearly every continent and every corner of the earth (I had definitely never heard of hummus or chiles rellenos when I used to read this book on lazy summer afternoons), and* Rather than seeing canned/highly processed foods as exciting miracles of modern culinary technology, we now see them as the less healthy and less tasty versions of food.This cookbook is definitely rooted in the food styles, tastes and knowledge of its mid-20th-century era.That being said, this was a very, VERY good children's cookbook for its era. The recipes are creative, attractive, and often whimsical. There is a LOT of information for a budding cook who doesn't want to just learn a particular recipe, but actually wants to learn how to cook - such as cooking methods and terminology, types of utensils, safety guidelines. It piques the interest through extras like the illustrations (including many gorgeous full-page color glossy photos of finished recipes) and the sidebar tips from the 12 kids who were the "Junior Testers" of all the recipes in the book.So, bottom line:1. If you are an adult who was in love with this book as a kid, buy it.2. If you are thinking of buying it for a child in your life today, I would say go ahead and buy it for its instructional value in the basics of cooking, but give the child a more contemporary children's cookbook at the same time.

My grandma's was falling out of the binding and she could find the chocolate chip cookies with her eyes closed. But this one was in great condition, so I guess I'll have more time to use it to rags. Received the book. It is in remarkable condition for being nearly 30 years old.The cover of the book I received matches the photo on the listing....but not the description. Be forewarned, this book does NOT contain the beautiful photos described in the review. In fact it contains on a very few black and "white" (the book is old) illustrations. One of my aunts gave me this book when I was seven. My copy is worn to shreds—food stains on every page, cover hanging on by a wire—but I still use it, 45 years later. It’s important enough to have survived many, many moves; sometimes supplanted by the likes of Julia Child and Jacques Pepin; but when I’m called on to bring an Easter dish to a get-together, my thoughts go immediately to the Bunny Salad in this book, and it’s always a hit.How much to love! The recipes are cute and imaginative, fairly simple but delicious. The kitchen tips and advice are stellar for any age. How to set the table? It’s here. How to scramble eggs? Also here. Measuring, stirring, meal prep are all described and illustrated in a most kid friendly format.It’s safe; parental permission and supervision is invoked whenever heat or knives are involved.May I recommend the chocolate pudding? It’s the most stained page in my copy...I just purchased the newest edition for my seven year old grandson. I was thrilled that the cover is exactly the same as mine (though cleaner), and I hope it gives him the beginning of the same lifelong enjoyment of cooking as it gave me.

I had a first edition of this cookbook as a little girl. I have no clue whatever happened to that book, but I am so happy that I found this one. I gave it to my grandkids to have at my home for cooking with grandma. They have all penciled in their names on the pages that they want to cook from with grandma. The book only have drawings rather than photos, but that is fine as the recipes are not all that difficult and it just makes in more exciting for kids to see what the real deal looks like in the end.

This cookbook was purchsed as a gift for a 10 year old girl. She loved the gift and together with her mother, has prepared a couple of the recipes in this book. she said it was really easy to read and understand, and it gave her a list of supplies that was required to make each recipe. The pictures are colorful which makes it even more interesting and eye catching. I, a senior lady, still have my original cookbook just like this which was given to me by my deceased mother. As a child, I loved using it and cooking with my mother's help.

One year has passed since the ending of the first book. Without spoiling it the solution to Fletcher's situation seems to be more of an excuse to let him age a year off page.Nevertheless the story itself draws the reader in without pulling them out too much. I rather enjoyed how the author was able to round out the world as well as the people who populated. You will get to see plenty of action and a dash of romance and tragedy. The Twist are pretty awesome however the author once again leaves the story on a cliffhanger. Thankfully the third and final book of the trilogy is already out. It does make me think that in the future I might wait until the author actually publishes an entire series if he continues with the Cliffhanger endings.In my opinion series such as these are more like one book rather than 3. Thankfully I am a fan of Epic fiction so long stories or books does not bother me.

Matharu is a skilled world-builder, really did his research in presenting mythical beasts from around the world and his magic system is unique. I couldn't put this book down and thought the pacing was great and the use of real world issues (Racism, Elitism) made it even more enjoyable and more relatable. Matharu creates good conflict with his characters as far as their obligations, motivations and what they have at stake throughout the plot. I am only giving it 4 stars because I feel like certain things you can see coming. For example, 2 characters are having a talk in a common area outside some dorms. They hear some rustling, brush it off and continue a sensitive discussion, not moving location at all. Sure enough a short time later, they find out someone overheard them. **insert eye roll** He may mention details in passing that you may not be meant to pay any mind to.. but they end up being significant. and i think most readers can tell they will be really important which is why they are kind of brushed by. Overall though, i do recommend this story as a light read for a fantasy lover.

Omg, I absolutely loved this second book! It took me at least a chapter or so to get back in the swing of things because I totally forgot that Fletcher was captured and imprisoned. But once I got through that, this was hard to put down.I ended up hating even more characters in this second installment, loving new ones and being surprised and even knowing some of the outcomes. We get to see Fletcher and Sylva's relationship blossom a bit, Othello capabilities and even even get introduced to some new characters. Unfortunately we also get to see more of Didric in this one as he teams up with the two others that Fletcher despises he most, Isadora and her brother.I definitely can't wait for the third book to hit shelves. I will be first in line at my local bookstore to purchase that!

Enjoyed this second installment of Summoner. It was just as engaging as the first book and I really want to buy the third book, but won't. The increase of price from 1st, to 2nd, to 3rd book is dramatic and imho, not worth it. A digital book does not have all the costs of a hard copy book. The price should reflect that. Jumping from 2.99 to 7.99 to 9.99 is just greedy.

A few months ago I picked up book one. I couldn't put it down, loved the characters so much I went and preordered this sequel, The Inquisition. I got the book on Friday. I finished it about 5 hours later. This book is even better than the first one and it's building to an even better 3rd book. These characters can't catch a break but still manage to kick much ass. Political intrigue, fast paced action, moral questions. this book has it all.The worst agony? Having to wait for the next installment.

I'll admit, I had this book on my Kindle and then sort of forgot about it for awhile. Once I finished up the 2nd book in the Trials of Apollo (review forthcoming) I dove right back into this one. I remember enjoying the different twist on magic that the first book introduced and it continues in this one. The second book in the series expands the cast of characters a little more yet still manages to focus on our main heroes. The author does a good job of writing the fight scenes and the dialogue that the characters have with each other feels natural and not forced. The third book in the series is out now and I intend to starting reading it ASAP. All and all, a good fantasy read.

I'll continue to read the story but it's losing me. I like the premise with the demon magic but this book felt like a filler.
