Josh Stumpenhorst is a Learning Commons Director at Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville, IL which is part of Naperville Community School District 203. He served as a 6th grade English and Social Science teacher for 13 years prior to taking the Learning Commons Director position. Drawn to Teach is a quick witty read that gets to the point. The point is to keep your focus on the students. If you do, everything will fall into place...test scores, classroom management, quality lessons and most importantly positive relationships with your students. As a veteran teacher, I loved everything about this book. Josh Stumpenhorst gives realistic scenarios and realistic solutions. He also is very honest that not every solution will work for every teacher, but he also makes it very clear that if what you are doing isn't working, you need to make changes. I also loved how the book was organized into problems, solutions, takeaways, and something for administrators. I've read dozens of books for teachers, and many of them repeat the same information throughout the book; a 300-page book could've been summarized into 10 pages. I feel each chapter in Drawn to Teach had something new to offer! The added bonus in each chapter is the "It will happen" pages...hysterical and so true!
I loved this book which is part text and part graphic novel. Excellent instruction and advice and even better illustrations. A look at the art of teaching and how we can unknowingly crush students and create our own issues when we force conformity and neglect to understand individuals needs. My favorite part is the "it will happen" interludes between chapters. This ranges from the humor of bodily functions to the tragedy of suicide.
Fantastic book! Excellent content and exceptionally well illustrated. Lots of great material for the classroom.
