Review

extremely impressed with the quality of this publication. The linear organization of the book that Raymond Giuliani provides, along with the superb, large photos, makes this a ‘must-have’ for any WWII or AFV fan (IPMS)Any fan of the Sherman tank will want to get this one onto their bookshelf I have no doubt, and historians of the Pacific War will find plenty of detail to interest them, and see how successful the Sherman proved to be in a theater of war where many thought conditions to be unsuitable for their operation. This books is ample evidence of how wrong that was. For the modelers, the sheer number of excellent clear pictures, coupled with the color profiles, will find this a first class reference for so many little details, mostly added in the field rather than in the factory. (Military Modeling)This is a very interesting book, focusing as it does on a very specific topic ( the Sherman tank ) in a very specific place and time ( the Pacific, 1943-45 ). That focus makes this book invaluable to fans of the Sherman tank in general, and also to students of the Pacific War of WWII. The photographs are fascinating, and the accompanying text is informative. Some of those photos will bear repeated examination, as the details shown are so interesting and varied. Detailed views of the tanks and equipment, as well as great diorama ideas are on every single page. The chronological manner in which the book is laid out is very well done, as it allows the reader to see the evolution of the Sherman itself, the tactics employed, and indeed the reader gets a good look at how the war in the Pacific was won through the eyes of Sherman crews. The physical layout of the each island's title page with the very informative maps and "big-picture" view of the specific island campaign provides the reader with terrific background information... (Armor Modeling and Preservation Society, Inc)richly illustrated book is of high visual value for all lovers of the Sherman tank. The photos are of high quality and would be a boon to modelers trying to re-create the variations and battlefield adaptations that occurred due to the diverse environmental conditions and enemy tactics encountered. I want to say I really looked forward to getting this book. Armor in the Pacific is my specialized area of expertise. I am a retired Marine who served in armor unit. The good news is the pictures are fantastic. A person who builds dioramas or models should get this book just for that. And I mean just for that because the bad news is the text is terrible. You will not be able to source this book or rely on it for information. The author cannot tell a late model M4A2 from a M4A3. He constantly refers to US Army units having M4A2's which is simply untrue. Only Marine Corps units had the diesel tanks. I think the reason also is that it is translated from French, and the translation is poor at best. Common military terms and acronyms all veterans will know and understand are completely slaughtered. Then, the author has this quirk about trying to be humorous or witty, I can't tell, but captions such as "The men stupidly put the treads on backwards" simply is not acceptable. Again, if you want a great picture book of US (only) units in action, Marines and Army, great. (There are no pictures of Commonwealth or Japanese tanks, unfortunately). It will serve a hobbyist well. But if you are looking for reliable information and want to source knowledge, forget it. This book is worthless in that regard.

Published/printed in France, the text often contains grammatical errors. There are some mis-identified vehicles in the captions, but overall the photos and the color line drawings are of good value to a modeler.

Tons o' unseen pictures. Great reference for scale mode lets.

Many good pictures and art work. Some of the captions seem to suffer from translation difficulties. Over all a good book.

This is a decent modeling reference that could have been so much better. Many other references are soft cover, flimsy by nature, and filled with small photographs, making picking out details quite difficult. The large hardback format of this book, with large size photos provides a lot of clear historical detail that will enthrall most model builders of Sherman tanks. Thrown in are occasional, very nice color profiles of the vehicles in the photos. The book is laid out in a very nice chronological order by Pacific island campaign. One can see how various models of the Sherman tank were introduced into the Pacific campaign and how tank crews increased add-on armor protection as the war progressed and became more vicious. The truly sad part of this book is the written material, which should be embarrassing for the publisher. The photo descriptions must have been written in French (country of origin for the publisher) and then run through a computer translator, with absolutely no review by anyone who speaks clear and proper English. The result is some sort of pigeon English with incorrect or clumsy wording and with varying past and present tense. Why lay out a nice book, furnish it with terrific visual depictions and then skimp on decent English language editing?

Once again Histoire & Collection have done a out standing job on there book about Shermans in the Pacific . I was very impressed with the book. It will make a very good addition to my collection

Very pleased, fast delivery.
