This book totally weirded me out. I had developed some interest in Yukio Mishima's character and personality since I learned about his cult for the body and the physical, his idealism, and nationalist ideas. I knew that he had some struggle to come to terms with his sexuality, but this book was written (probably intentionally) as a teenager diary with all sorts of graphic details (though well covered by the use of euphemisms) about his fantasies and urges about other men. What I mean by "teenager diary" is that the narrative style on its own is not very catchy and does not flow all that well.On the other hand, I see great value in this book as it shows in great detail what the life of a sexually confused boy must be: the longing, the suffering, the rage, the anxiety. I think this book would be a great read for any boy or man who is going through a similar situation. For many people it's good to know about someone who shares their feelings or experiences.I don't think I would recommend this book to anyone, except someone directly interested in the subject.

What an incredible book, unlike anything I have read before. It took me awhile to read, as almost every paragraph carries the weight of a poem. This is a story of a young Japanese man discovering he is gay, set against the U.S. air war in the mid 40's. It speaks to the split that occurs in one's psyche for those who do not meet the social norms. It tears the soul in two at so many different levels. The entire book focuses on the author's inner life. All his thoughts, feelings, fantasies, and hungers are laid bare for the reader to digest. His later introduction to a woman he cannot forget seems to represent some sort of purity, yet even this is fraught with contradictions. One cannot change the core of who they are, and a hidden life often brings torment. The raw honesty and stark reality of this book will not soon be forgotten.

This book is heavy. The way it expresses longing and desire are graphic, explicit, and can be uncomfortable at times. The protagonist's obsession with vulnerability, beauty, and violence, flow together to paint not only a picture of his desires, but also refer to the deepest parts of Japanese culture that were being suppressed by Westernization following the world wars. Confessions of a Mask is like reading the depths of the protagonist's (and by extent, the author's) mind.

Interesting book, though I thought it slow for the first half, the second half brings an interesting twist in character development.

Though Mr. Mishima deals with the nascent awakening of his sexual "difference" briefly in this work, it is more, ultimately, to this reader at least - a peering into the life-perspective of a different culture. I don't know how old the author was when this was written, but it seems as if it actually were written by a teenager, to my perspective.

I waded carefully into this book, not knowing what the writing would be like. From the opening of the book the imagery and use of language were fantastic and captivating (some credit/blame may go to the translator). The story itself - specifically the main voice, a young man (Mishima himself?) - never progresses. The same lack of form and function persists in the telling of the story, start to finish. Mishima muses and postulates about love and sexuality. The voice explores its secrets and thoughts carefully and meticulously. And while the explorations are clever for their language and style - they are not fresh and grow stale as they are reviewed cyclically.Does he love a woman, does he not. Does he feel sexually attracted to women? No - but certainly aroused by men. But - nothing ever happens. His arousal for men is only truly brought to life in vivid fantasies of pain and suffering inflicted on the men in his mind. And - still - at the close of the book - the character continues to avoid himself and chase after a girl he has used as his foil and who is now married to another man. He is the same person despite his years and experiences. This book has a potential for power - but feels sad and hollow.Per Mishima, "It was like being given a gift of damp fireworks."

A fascinating read for all with an interest in the works of Yukio Mishima. `Confessions' is Mishima's tortured autobiography, laying his life and mind bare, from his earliest memories through to the immediate post war period. Mishima touches on vivisection in his extraordinary `The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea'; `Confessions' established the groundwork for this through a gruelling vivisection of his own life. The deep and murky elements of his personality are exposed - the constant theme of desire for death, a particular kind of death, which he awaited impatiently `with a sweet expectation' (only to run from it with abandon/relief when his army enlistment drew him close), his morbid sadomasochistic/homo-erotic sexual fantasies, his life echoing man's desire to play with fire and more, and more. Mishima's peculiar construct of a life appeared ready to collapse as defeat in the war loomed; with the recognition that his life on the edge was at an end (oh no it wasn't!), he would need to `begin that everyday life of a member of human society' - his greatest fear of all.Mishima may have felt himself `incapable of social intercourse ... nothing but a creature, non-human and somehow strangely pathetic' - sad, but the literary world is without doubt richer for the brilliance that was born of that touch of madness.

I think Mishima's psychology is so interesting. In my opinion, a very intriguing, albeit strange (of course), book.
