Fantastic book for any child who always wants to know where things come from. Well-written with very good illustrations. Appropriate for children ages 3-8. The text tells you a lot about what is happening in the illustrations- which are detailed enough that they offer plenty of opportunities to elaborate.

Great for elementary school aged children. This book is currently being used in a 1st grade classroom. It was also given as a gift to a 5 year old who loved learning and pointing to the pictures as and adult read.

Cool explanations of how different fabrics (cotton, wool, rubber, silk, synthetic) are created and turned into clothing. It's like the How It's Made tv show turned into picture book form! Tons of fun and very informative.There's a lot of information packed into each spread, but clear (and cute) illustrations help readers keep it all straight.The numbering (or lack thereof) of different steps in the process felt inconsistent from fabric to fabric and was a little confusing for me. Other than that, I loved it. I imagine lots of kids poring over the pages, soaking up the info--and looking at their own clothes in a whole new way!

I picked this up at the library and it's really neat. It explains how fabrics are made for different clothes- rubber, wool, synthetic fibers, etc. in a way that kids can understand. I definitely learned a lot and I sew so I thought this was neat.Like another reviewer mentioned, some of the pages show various cultural groups doing the work for that particular fabric. Perhaps it could've been represented better, but it's probably a pretty accurate representation of which cultural groups actually make which clothes.Either way I have to really appreciate how much effort goes into our clothes after reading this. I hope my kids have the same appreciation! My kids are 2 and 4 years old and listened pretty well to this... They seemed to like the illustrations and step by step visual on how things are made.

Very helpful in Krakow. We just got back, and I was thankful to have this handy pocket guide with us that includes a map of the city and highlights that helped us determine in minutes whether we wanted to experience it for ourselves. We didn't use it for restaurants as much as others would (though it's helpful for that, too), as we just ate wherever we were when we were hungry. I would definitely recommend giving it more than a glance before you go and even mark some pages or things you want to see, because if you wait until you get there, it can be too overwhelming. DEFINITELY recommend going to St. Mary's to see the altarpiece, the largest of its kind in the world. Regardless of how you feel about churches or Catholicism or even art, it's impressive and picture-worthy for anyone.

Great little guide book. We used it for our recent 3 day stay in Kraków and the recommendations were perfect! Especially the vegetarian restaurants and things to do off the beaten track. Nice inconspicuous size, didn't have to haul around a heavy book. Great map! I wish it had a transit map as well though.

This is a fine guide, but I would recommend the In Your Pocket Guide to Krakow instead, as I found that one more informative and easier to use.

Very informative and helpful for me for planning my trip. I'll let you know after my trip if I had any problems with the accuracy of the information.

The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen is simply superb. Written with an unflinching eye and great humor, it is a brilliant and chilling look into the hearts and minds of men and the cruelty we inflict upon each other. The first 50 or so pages are devoted to the introduction of the Captain; a mole in South Vietnam's special forces. He is also a bastard, and half-breed, with a Vietnamese mother he adores and a French father (who also happens to be a Roman Catholic priest) he despises. He is a microcosm of a homeland divided in half--with a dual nature and opposites that seem to only attract loathing or disdain.This is the fall of Saigon, the Vietnam war and the dislocation to America told from an Asian perspective, and a story non-Asian Americans should read if only for that viewpoint. But there is so much more: brilliant writing and beautiful prose that is often hilarious, and always thought-provoking. "I calmed the tremor in my gut. I was in close quarters with some representative of the most dangerous creature in the history of the world, the white man in a suit." Or, "you must claim America, she said. America will not give itself to you. If you do not claim America, if America is not in your heart, America will throw you into a concentration camp, or a reservation or a plantation."This is not an easy book to read--and no, not because there aren't quotation marks. God help some of these reviewers if they ever pick up Virginia Woolf or James Joyce. At times though the scenes of torture and rape are sickening and the author's pov about American hegemony (cultural and political) is going to disturb many. But it is challenging in the very best way. The Sympathizer does what great literature is supposed to do--force us out of our comfort zone to rethink assumptions. This wonderful, disturbing, challenging novel will do more than that--it will affirm something indomitable and essential about us all--a desire to carry on, and to live.

I read this book as part of a monthly book club's reading list; I was disappointed in it, and marvel that it earned a Pulitzer Prize. This book took me back to the Vietnam era and the Boat People era, and that is a time when, in real life (as well as in books) there were few sympathetic characters. The book includes a send-up of Apocalypse Now, another Vietnam-era story with no sympathetic characters. So, while this might be true-to-life (in some ways I'm sure it is), this isn't a life I'm eager to revisit. Normally I don't down-rate books, as I have no desire to hurt other authors, but since this one won a Pulitzer, there's vanishingly little chance that my review will hurt the author or the book's sales, I want to warn readers that this is tough, gritty, disturbing and powerful (but not in a good way).

The Sympathizer is a powerful novel, taking as its subject the final days and aftermath of the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a North Vietnamese spy who is also the aide to a top ranking South Vietnamese general.The mole (never named) was educated in the United States before returning to Vietnam and signing on as a Viet Cong spy. He accompanies the general to the United States after the fall of Saigon and continues his espionage work there. He ultimately returns to Vietnam in an ill-fated attempt to establish a counter-insurgency on behalf of the general.I found the novel to be highly educational, as I’d never read such an account of the Vietnam War from the viewpoint of the Vietnamese. The refugee experience was largely unknown to me. While the final 50-100 pages are among the most powerful, containing acts of psychological and physical torture, they are presented in an almost stream of consciousness narrative which can become tiresome to wade through.Certainly a worthy novel, however I can imagine that many might not enjoy it.

The Sympathizer is a very witty novel narrated by a Franco-Vietnamese communist spy in the South Vietnamese intelligence department. He (who is nameless) is American-educated and ends up going to America after the fall of Saigon. The third dimension of the novel is added by the narrator's dual nature and ability to see both sides of every conflict. As such he is very ironical and even snarky, especially about America, but also about Vietnam. The style is quite fizzy and engaging.The problem with the story is that it is not the revelation the author thinks it is. In an interview in the back of the book Nguyen says he hopes the novel will make people "uncomfortable in a good way." However, I doubt that many of his readers harbor any illusions about America's involvement in the Vietnam war. Yes, we dropped Napalm. Yes, we killed kids. Yes, we taught the South Vietnamese "advanced interrogation techniques" (i.e. a more sophisticated form of torture). This is not news. In addition, Nguyen's readers surely know that the South Vietnamese government was cruel and hopelessly corrupt, and that when the North took over, they were even worse, because they were cruel and fanatics who tried to "re-educate" people.The ending is a bit of a let-down because the narrator ends up with a cosmic, comic insight into the universe and politics that really isn't all that insightful. I would still recommend this novel for its style and for the personality of the narrator. But not for its supposed revelations about history or the cosmos.

What an astonishing read! The author clearly wanted to give a voice and real representation to Vietnamese people. He accomplished his goal, but just as his hero is a man of two minds, Nguyen's book is about Vietnam and everywhere. It is about Vietnamese people and everyone. When I was growing up, there was a saying that came out of Russia, "Under the Czar it was man against man. But now, since the glorious Marxist revolution, it is exactly the opposite!" So true in this book as well.Still the book tells a unique story while it is telling an everywhere story, and it is telling it in prose that is so beautifully written, it is almost poetry. And to have such a poetic soul with such a dark and at times, grim tale, is magic indeed!

Bought this item for my grandson in 3rd grade. The clear and simple was the reason I bought it. I was disappointed that every time he looked up a word it was not in the dictionary. Might be good for 1st & 2nd graders, but definitely not for 3rd or above.

Nice but some words that in school for 3rd grade weren’t even in it rather have one that even common words kids will hear and use would be included

I ordered these because I love using the earlier editions with my second grade class. This edition was revised to the point that it is no longer accessible to second graders. It is now a thesaurus and a dictionary. I liked it more as just a thesaurus. The typeface is much smaller now. I returned them. I will order more of the earlier edition.

After looking through many thesaurus (for children and adults) to find a good one for my first grader, I chose this one. It is easy to use. Print is not too little. The only thing that I am not crazy about is the size of the book, a little too big, but nothing too bad. Overall I think it is the best choice for an elementary school student who loves to write!

This is a nice thesaurus for children. I wished it had more words listed. It seems like my children have to break out the big college thesaurus more often now.

Now if we can just get the kids to use it. Only draw back is that it is not a hardback so expect it to eventually curl from use.

I thought this book was for a little bit younger child, but I was plesantly suprised when it arrived! It's perfect for our 8 year old all the way to the grown-ups in the family. Our 8 yr old likes it because it looks like a "real" dictionary/thesaurus, but is easy to use. He's just learning how to use a real dictionary, so this was a great buy.

Just like it says clear and simple, my grandkids love that they can read it and understand everything easily.

Classic folk book on my kindle is a great idea.

This book is very well written and easy to read. I love the fact that the time was taken to record this wonderful knowledge for future generations to learn. We should never lose these skills, if we do we will be much poorer for it.

This book was not as enjoyable as most books for me to read. It is limited in its scope and could have covered more interesting subject about other housecrafts. Having lived half my life in the area I know of what I speak. It is not one of the better Foxfire books.

I recommend all the Foxfire books to everybody who reads. I've been enjoying them ever since the first one was published, years ago. So glad they are now available in digital format.

How Diane Moody created The Teacup Novellas is quite intriguing. The recipient of a tea cup collection, she crafted five unique stories that involved the individual cups and saucers. Each story is a page-turner and quite addictive. Moody had me hooked when the package of vintage tea cups arrived via UPS. As the main character, Lucy, is struggling through a serious case of writer's block, those precious cups were just what she needed to create a series of stories.Each book in the series tells a unique story, each involving a different teacup. And, just as Diane Moody planned, I couldn't stop after just one book, but found myself in love with this series of stories. A totally charming set of novellas with love, friendship, and life lessons that draw the reader into the plot.

This is a delightful collection of the series originally published separately. Each on can be read as a stand-alone, but they’re better read in sequence. Here is what I thought about them:Tea with Emma - 5Lucy gets a package from her aunt's estate. She's inherited her aunt's gorgeous array of delicate teacups and saucers. She likes to get packages, because that brings the friendly, good-looking UPS guy. Lucy is a writer, who's been stuck without a story to tell with a deadline looming. The cups give her inspiration, and she begins to write Maddie's story. Maddie comes back to Austin, Texas, from England with her best friend Lanie. Maddie is determined to open an English tearoom and help those around her find love. Opening the tearoom goes well, but her matchmaking abilities just leaves chaos. She realizes only God can straighten out the mess she's made. Might He also send her a love-interest?Strike the Match - 4Going to a prestigious university in New York to study journalism cost much more than Keri McMillan thought, so, after two years, she comes back home to work for her dad's construction company in Oregon. When his latest project burns to the ground, she discovers he's near bankruptcy. Grant Dawson is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, so Keri can't understand why he chose to leave Los Angles to run the little Waterford Weekly. After the fire, he hires her as a reporter, and gives her the assignment of finding the arsonist.I didn't like this novella quite as much as I did the first one in this series, TEA WITH EMMA. Keri was too self-centered, prickly, mouthy, and hard. I knew who was setting the fires from the first time he came into the picture, but this only made me feel good, and didn't detract from the story. STRIKE THE MATCH left too many questions unanswered. We don't even know if Keri's dad is able to weather his financial storm or if she'll finish her degree or stay in Waterford. This one should have been longer and really finished. It almost appeared as if the author became tired of it too soon.Home to Walnut Ridge - 4Tracey Collins comes home to Tennessee, when the senator she believed in and worked so hard for in Washington, D.C. starts pressuring her for an intimate relationship, and she can tell no one there for fear of destroying Amanda, her best friend and the senator's wife. Tracey feels drawn to him, but is he too broken to ever be healed?This is a very good story, but it is almost too shallow. The characters never developed to the point I became invested and involved with them. I was interested to see what happened, but I was left feeling uncertain. Even though there's a good ending, I felt Noah's problems were not really resolved and needed a stronger resolution. I didn't really feel connected with Tracey, and therefore she seemed rather one-dimensional and flat. I don't regret reading it, but it could have been so much more with just a little additional work.At Legend’s End - 5Olivia Thomas, a loan officer in her forties, finds that compassion really does pay. A man she loaned start-up capital for his business when no one else would has made it big and gifts her five million dollars. She decides to take a long vacation to make plans about what she wants to do, and her best friend suggests she go to Caden Cove, Maine. It’s a quaint little town on the coast, filled with tourists in the summer but not many in the winter. Much to her surprise, Olivia is enthralled with the place, especially with the often grumpy bookseller. When she learns of the legend associated with the B & B where she's staying, she shrugs it off, but then, she wonders if the curse may have found her after all.The first of the book seemed very slow to me, and I couldn't get involved. I didn't begin to really care about Olivia until she starts sparring with Trevor. Then the novella took off for me and became a page-turner. It was wonderful. I’m really looking forward to the next one in the series now, although the romance the author is having with the UPS man is getting a little redundant and needs some new life.A Christmas Peril - 5Mark Christopher was taken hostage on his UPS run and ended up in a hospital in a coma right before Christmas. Lucy Alexander is devastated. She knows she’s fallen in love with him. While she’s waiting by Mark’s bedside, her cousin sends her Aunt Lucille’s diary, which recounts when her love, Gary Reynolds, is hit on the head with a gun while trying to rescue an older lady. He also ends up in the hospital in a coma just before Christmas.I have read the other Teacup novellas, but I never felt a connection with Lucy and Mark before. Their snippets were too short in the other novellas. Here they came alive. I like the parallel stories of Lucille and Gary in the past and Lucy and Mark in the present, although they were so similar that they did tend to run together in my mind at times. I still found the book drew me and held me.

There's nothing I can add to the other five star reviews without repeating things over again, so I won't even try. Just know that all five stars are deserved here, and each story is a wonder in clean Christian romance. It's great to read this in the full collection. Not only do you get all five novellas, a couple of them being a bit longer than standard novella length, but you also get the framing story that takes place in modern times, with its own romance, so you basically get six romances to read, not just five. An excellent job, and one I will revisit again. The fact that the last story here is the Christmas time double romance makes this already great collection even better. Unmissable!

I just finished this and I did enjoy it very much! It is 5 stories that revolve around tea cups. The author inherited tea cups from a favorite aunt or grandmother. She decided to write a story about an author inheriting tea cups from her beloved Aunt Lucille who she spent many hours with drinking tea and hearing stories about how she acquired each tea cup. The 5 novella's involve characters who inherit tea cups that hold memories for them from their loved ones who passed away and left them the cups. Kind of confusing but really sweet and sentimental and each novella is completely different and well written. Interesting characters and believable stories and the Lord has his hand on each one of them guiding them to their destinies.

I just finished the first story about Maddie and Lanie and Maddie's grandmother. I especially like the Christian aspect of this story without going overboard but still evoking a spirit of forgiveness. I also loved the aspect of writing each story in relation to a tea cup and the memories it invoked. Looking forward to the next stories!

I really love all of these stories. They are down home wholesomeness. I totally enjoy the writing style. I really hope Diane writes more of these kinds of stories. The stories were so good I couldn't quit reading them and then I finished the last one. Blast! Begging for more! I love when I read a story and the characters seem so real to me that I feel like they are right in the room with me the whole time. But I sure miss them when they are gone and wonder what they are doing now or how they are doing. This is how these stories are for me. Love, Love, Love them

These stories are wonderful. They are a complete story in each novella but the whole is great. I especially like how the last story was Lucy and Mark's. It was a nice surprise to get the rest of their story. I would recommend this book to every reader of any age. Wonderful thread through the series of faith.

I purchased the paperback book because I loved the cover and wanted it in hardcopy as opposed to kindle. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I gave it a five star rating because it was a delightful quick read. The stories are very predictable but fun and nice for times you want light reading.
