This review is for the third edition of the book, for which deliveries from Amazon began around the end of August 2017. The book has been extensively changed from the first two editions, which, according to the author, are identical except for the publisher. Because of these extensive changes, comments from reviews earlier than the above date may not necessarily apply to the third edition. The changes consist not only of the addition of new research results since the earlier editions, but also considerable reorganization to introduce the concepts in a more logical sequence.The book collects decades of research into loudspeaker measurements and subjective preferences determined under controlled, double-blind conditions. From the perspective of a loudspeaker designer, it makes the connection between how a collection of anechoic frequency response measurements, sampled across an imaginary sphere surrounding the loudspeaker, can be performed and processed such that a design yielding results meeting specified criteria will lead to high subjective ratings when tested under double-blind conditions. From the perspective of a consumer, it demonstrates how, if the appropriate processed data are provided (unfortunately still not widespread), one can visually inspect the data to gain insight into subjective quality. For more information about this approach than I could ever provide here, check out the online video by Dr. Toole titled, "Floyd Toole - Sound reproduction – art and science/opinions and facts". This video will give you a very good idea of what the book is about - at least in part.Contrary to critics who claim that Dr. Toole is just repeating the Harman party line, he developed these measurement techniques while working at the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC) and brought them to Harman with him. They were originally published in a 1986 AES Journal article titled, "Loudspeaker Measurements and Their Relationship to Listener Preferences: Part 2" while he was still working at the NRCC. These calculations can accurately predict a so-called "room curve" from a collection of the loudspeaker's anechoic measurements. He shows that a loudspeaker having a flat on-axis anechoic response will have a room curve that tilts downward with increasing frequency. A "room curve" in this context is a measurement of the loudspeaker's steady-state frequency response using typical measurement software, smoothed to eliminate the "hash" that shows up in the unsmoothed measurement. This is why equalizing a system to a flat room curve results in a subjectively bright sound. It's somewhat disheartening how little this is understood. People who have made this mistake could lose confidence in the efficacy of audio measurements in general.The above techniques break down when dealing with in-room bass response. In the modal frequency region of a room, the room itself dominates the system frequency response, so for optimum bass performance, room modes and their interaction with the loudspeakers and/or subwoofer(s) must be taken into account. Chapter 8 contains a very good discussion of room modes, and how equalization, the placement of listening position, and the placement of one or more subwoofers interacts with the room modes to affect what is measured and heard. He refers to the latter technique as "mode manipulation". With multiple subs and a given set of sub positions, the possibility exists for reducing the seat-to-seat variation of the frequency response in the modal region. This technique requires individual equalization of each sub, combined with optimization software. Harman calls their implementation "Sound Field Management" (SFM). Unfortunately, it is only available on JBL Synthesis custom installation products. DIY alternatives to Sound Field Management exist, however.I've already gone on way too long, yet I've only scratched the surface of what's covered in the book. If you have the previous edition and liked it, getting the third edition is a no-brainer, as there's plenty of new material and the organization of the book is much improved. Those who are committed to a rational approach to achieving good sound and willing to put forth the necessary effort to enhance their understanding of how to do it will benefit the most from the book.

Essential reading for any serious home audio/home theater enthusiast. This edition greatly re-organizes the first edition (the 'second edition' was simply a reprint of the first edition, under an new publisher) and adds much new material. And btw, the complaints here that it is 'repetitive' are misplaced. As Toole notes in the book, he intentionally repeats information because he expects some readers will skip chapters, in order to go directly to the chapter(s) pertinent to them. It's a feature, not a bug, and a good one.

At some point I'll write up a review, but since Amazon only allows questions for products other than books I'm putting it here. Plus I can't find any straightforward way of reaching Dr. Toole.Dr. Toole, thank you for the really important work you've done. I was puzzled after buying the new edition why Figure 22.3 (see photo) was omitted from the new version. Especially after reading about your response to the internet trolls mischaracterizing your position on first reflections. Was there a reason why you omitted the figure? Anyone else that thinks they might know why please feel free to pipe in.

I found the book to be enlightening concerning the marketing hype that is prevalent in the industry. The author is very well respected in the field of acoustics. He delves in to what is important in evaluation in audio systems. The book changed many of my goals in audio system design.

Toole's latest book is another great reference for audiophiles, sound engineers, and anyone wanting a look at what makes great (and bad) sound. The expanded sections go well beyond the first edition and there is lots of new material.

Solid scientific info -- no magical diamond coated USB cables, putting in your own utility pole, or fancy tricks with reflections (in all fairness on the latter, Bose has solid technology, but why waste the effort on tricks just to make a smaller speaker sound big?).My only gripe is -- Dr Toole admits to not having studied digital much... he recommends using DSP for parametric equalization, but I feel he (or a successor) needs to explore this topic in light of how the added layers of ADC/DAC may color the sound esp as getting good sound out of the first DAC in the chain is a major focus nowadays.

Rae loves to snort, chew her lip, bounce her heel, and lust after Devon. Her inner monologue rivals Anna's in 50 Shades. (Horribly dripping with stupidity)Their "forbidden love" is predictable and corny. Rae's friends are annoying, the professors incompetent. I made it through 35% of this FREE series, asking myself a thousand times why I kept reading this drivel.Answer: because it was free. But many other books are free or nearly free, and some actually have characters you won't want to shake, spank, or strangle. Don't know how old these 5 star reviewers are, but I'd guess around 12.Do yourself a favor and skip this horribly edited, badly spelled, poorly developed garbage. There went several hours I'll never get back!

This series started off great and I was really enjoying it. I found book one to be so interesting and exciting in its premise that I just couldn't wait to get through it. The only disappointment were a few sub-plots that seemed to come out of nowhere and go nowhere, but didn't really detract from the story. Book one ended well enough but it's been a high-speed downward spiral from there. All told, I only made it through the first three. The second two got progressively worse in terms of the plot (banal), the grammar (poor) and the extent of the typographical errors. At times it felt like the author didn't even care enough to put any effort into the writing. For example, all of the following - quoted precisely from the book - appeared on a single page in Book 3:"...to the small little piece of wood that so intricately fit into the carvings...""Rae opened her eyes, [note: we weren't previously alerted she'd been walking with her eyes closed] a carving of a man with a raised axe inches from her face. The rapid beating of her heart distracted any other noise she might hear, like the noises she actually needed to be listing for."And on another page soon after:"Madame Elpis stood by the door looking down her long noise at Rae".Add to all that a growing number of inconsistencies in the story and the author's apparent inability to keep the British and American details straight (e.g: a British character refers to a "parking lot" instead of a car park), etc., and it all just became too distracting to be enjoyable.I'm still curious about how things turn out for the heroine and where she goes next, but reading this series has turned into a chore, and it feels like I have to work too hard to make sense of the writing with no guarantee of a commensurate reward.

An interesting reversal of the tried old child of destiny trope. This series is a bit like if we had gotten the Harry Potter story from the PoV of Drako instead of the "good guys". Our main heroine, having been shipped to a new "special" school discovers around her 16th birthday that she has hidden magical powers about to surface, and that magic actually exist in the first place (great family upbringing right there 10/10 on the parenting rating scale). There is only one little problem, she is basically the heir to the local equivalent of Lord Voldemort - her dead dad, she has barely known. When I read, I’m mostly too immersed in the story to notice technical aspects of book writing. This one was the exception, as I repeatedly found myself thinking “I never read a series more in need of an editor’s touch!”. The author keeps losing track of her own plot, repeatedly contradicting the details/events/developments mentioned as recently as 10 pages previously. This makes both the author and the main character look bad, seeing as characters have eye-opening revelations one page only to forget all about it...again, and again,and again. Makes them look like particularly manic squirrels chasing their tails, except the tails are long in their mouth and the squirrels are apparently too dumb to even realise that. Also, some serious proofreading is needed to eliminate phrases that sound the same but mean absurdly different things (“fowl play” anyone? True story)- again, this occurs so often in the book that the distraction of figuring out what the author meant makes difficult to stay focused on the story (simple as it is). Cliffhangers in every book of the series are simply not enough of a “hook” to make me continue. I can’t think of any reader group, no matter how young, whomI could recommend this series to.

I really enjoyed this series, but all the MISTAKES! Throughout the entire series (books 1-12) there were constant mistakes of names randomly changing, car model changes from book to book, etc. There was even an entire part that was just straight copied from the previous book, but with little changes. It's like the author forgot what she had written.Other than all the random mistakes, this series was fast paced and kept you locked in. Each book's ending was pretty much a cliff-hanger so it made you want to pick up the next book right away.

After reading book one, thoughts of the story wouldn't fade. I kept wondering what happened next so bought the series. I was not disappointed. May has found the fine line between successful cliffhanger and money grabbing irritation. Each book told a complete story while building on the previous tale that ended leaving you anxious for the next one. Well done. When chances to splurge on myself arise these have jumped high on my wish list. Hopefully I'll get the chance to buy another boxed set for the next parts of the series.

Sixth is "Intentional Formation in the Way of Christ and the Rule of the Community Along the Lines of the Old Novitiate." Seventh is "Nurturing Common Life Among Members of Intentional Community." Eighth is "Support for Celibate Singles Alongside Monogamous Married Couples and Their Children." Ninth is "Geographical Proximity to Community Members Who Share a Common Rule of Life." Tenth is "Care for the Plot of God's Earth Given to Us Along with Support of Our Local Economies." Eleventh is "Peacemaking in the Midst of Violence and Conflict Resolution." An ancient breeze is beginning to blow in unexpected places in North America. While monastic spirituality and institutions have been part of the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox communions for centuries, some North American Protestants are beginning to explore this approach to spirituality and community. Inspired by traditional monastic forms and disciplines as well as some Anabaptist traditions, proponents of a "new monasticism" advocate a turn, at least in part, to the kinds of "intentional community" seldom seen in American Protestant churches.Jonathan R. Wilson coined the term "new monasticism" in his short monograph, Living Faithfully In a Fragmented World. Drawing on the social analysis of Alasdair MacIntyre (After Virtue) and the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Life Together and Letters and Papers From Prison), Wilson called for a "new monasticism ... that will sustain the [church's] witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ through faithful living." (Living Faithfully, p. 69) This call assumes that the contemporary church is so compromised by its identification with and embrace of the forces and institutions of modernity and empire, that disentanglement from these forces and institutions is necessary for the church to recover its identity and mission.In June 2004, the Rutba House ("a Christian community of hospitality, peacemaking, and discipleship" in Durham, N.C.) invited representatives from various neo-monastic communities across the country to a conference designed to "discern a possible shape of a new monasticism." School(s) for Conversion: 12 Marks of a New Monasticism is one result of this meeting. Participants in the conference identified twelve "marks" or common characteristics of these neo-monastic communities. These marks include: sharing economic resources with fellow community members and the needy, hospitality to the stranger, lament for racial divisions within the church and our communities combined with the active pursuit of a just reconciliation, geographical proximity to community members who share a common rule of life, and peacemaking in the midst of violence and conflict resolution along the lines of Matthew 18.Edited by the Rutba House, School(s) for Conversion contains an eloquent introduction by Wilson and one essay, written by various conference participants, on each of the twelve marks. Essay contributors include members of The Simple Way and New Jerusalem Now recovery center in Philadelphia; Reba Place Fellowship in Evanston, Illinois; and Communality in Lexington, Kentucky. The description of the story made me think that Nina would be offered a million dollars to go out on 3 dates. Although that wasn't what happened in the story, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved all the characters but Chet was my favorite. Nina is a college student who is struggling financially. Shane has been her best friend for most of her life. Chet is Shane's older brother who left home at the age of 16 and hasn't been back since then. They all have their quirks and baggage but they are able to work through them in time for a HEA.

I thought this book was really good. The storyline was a little different which I enjoyed. The characters were likable. The chemistry between between Nina and Chet was undeniable. Decent read.

I loved everything about this book from the unique storyline to the main characters Chet, a tattoo artist as well as a sketch and paint artist, and Nina, his brother Shane’s best friend. She’s getting her Master’s Degree and as oft is the case, short on money. Chet contacted Shane and told him that their absentee father has passed away in Ireland and has left his estate in Chet’s name. He will share it with Shane and their mother if Shane will arrange three dates with Nina who has mesmerized him for the past six years since he saw a picture of her with Shane on his social media page. She has been his muse in so many of his tattoo designs and in his drawings and paintings. It’s this draw to Nina that brought him back home after all this time. Shane’s a skeptic but relents and presents the contract that Chet has drawn up for her to agree to the three dates, an the money will be divided between Chet, Shane and their mother. The dates begin and so does the mayhem between freinds Shane and Nina and then between brothers.. I enjoyed the writing style, the unique storyline and the romance that develops between Chet and Nina.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
