Temperance Creek: A Memoir, by Pamela Royes

Review

"Watching Royes find her way, not only in nature but through difficult personal decisions, makes for compelling, enduring reading." —The Washington Post“Heartfelt and brimming with lyrical appreciation for nature and personal freedom, this is not only the account of a woman who followed the stirrings of a restless heart. It is also a kind of elegy to the youthful rebels and dreamers of the late 1960s and early '70s in search of new ways of being and belonging. A modern frontier adventure for nature lovers and armchair travelers alike.”—Kirkus"Pam Royes has written a grand story, overflowing with hunger and beauty and pluck. Held within her tale is an exquisite gift: the chance to see a woman and a man shaped and sculpted – and in the end, made more gloriously human – by having merged their lives with one of the wildest, most spectacular landscapes on Earth."—Gary Ferguson, author of The Carry Home: Lessons from the American Wilderness"What’s going to happen to a girl child from a sedate household who names her bicycle Dynamite? By this book’s lights, her trajectory veers from home into a feral thirst for a different life made from scratch in the mountains. Temperance Creek takes you back to the land in the company of a sensitive, wise, and zesty woman and her chosen man. She’ll guide you into remote corners of Oregon and Idaho to herd sheep, lust for the horizontal vertigo of full gallop, ponder the outback ways of men and women, suffer a lost brother, champion a warrior’s search for peace, and roll a smoke on horseback as the storm gathers overhead. By reading, it’s not too late to live this life. This is a book you will savor, and give to the lucky among your friends."—Kim Stafford, author of 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do: How My Brother Disappeared"Temperance Creek is a great adventure in a great place. And maybe most of all a great love story. North Dakota girl with wanderlust meets Oregon vet hiding out in remote Hells Canyon of the Snake River with horses. In a flash, throws in her lot, and the two begin a journey through outrageous terrain and sheep camps, learning to live with and off the land, and with each other. There are plenty of Vietnam vet stories out there, and accounts of midcentury music, drugs, and community. Theirs is a different journey, one a few might have guessed at, but fewer would have dared."—Rich Wandschneider, Director, Josephy Library of Western History and Culture"There's more true magic in this book than many I've read in years. Pam Royes' voice is clear and sinewy, supremely honest, humble, brave, and funny, and her love story, set in the wilderness in a time of profound cultural transition, is incandescently vivid, earthy and real. Temperance Creek is compulsively readable, and refreshing as a plunge in a deep clear swimming hole."—Karen Fisher, author of A Sudden Country"Temperance Creek is a compelling memoir about love, courage, and transformation. Pamela Royes deftly chronicles her journey from a suburban college student to a "wild woman," from hippie to sheepherder to outlaw, Her trail starts at the University of Oregon and finishes in wild and remote Hell's Canyon on the Snake River. Along the way, she bravely confronts rattlesnakes, cougars, bears, and a bullet wound to her thigh, while learning the complex tasks of sheepherding from her partner, the intrepid Skip. On another level, the book honors the legacy of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce people who first occupied the beautiful landscapes the author traverses. This is a wonderful book. Readers will want to put on a pair of comfortable hiking boots and follow the paths the author cherishes."—Craig Lesley, author of Winterkill and River Song"As a young woman, Pam Royes had the guts and grace to do what the rest of us only dream of:  she ditched convention and lit out for the territory—in her case the spectacularly austere territory of Hells Canyon.  Riding ever deeper into this radiant outback, Pam fell in love – first with a landscape, then with a man and finally with a way of life that was fast disappearing before their eyes. Pam’s memoir of this time and place made me shiver, it made me laugh, it made me wonder—and above all it made me see with new eyes a place I thought I knew.  This is a wise woman’s coming of age story—what a story, what an age, what a woman!"—David Laskin, author of The Children’s Blizzard and The Family"Pamela Royes' dramatic history has fascinated me for years. Her life seems a miracle in so many ways, but it is her brave heart, her endurance, her belief in the land, and her capacity for love that has brought her to this place of lyrical contemplation. Like Cheryl Strayed's Wild, Temperance Creek is part adventure story, part cautionary tale, and, finally, a meditation on marriage—a fearless reckoning with the decisions that have shaped one woman's life."—Kim Barnes, author of In the Wilderness: Coming of Age in Unknown Country and In the Kingdom of MenIf Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire made you wish you could go back in time to be a park ranger in the '60s, Temperance Creek may make you wish you could be a sheepherder in the early '70s of Eastern Oregon . . . Reminiscent of the best of Pam Houston and Rick Bass, Royes has penned a memoir worthy of repeated reading. ―Bend Magazine

First, the writing is wonderful. Second, the story is compelling no matter who you are. But If you are a baby boomer, add another reason to read it. If you're also a woman, add another reason. If you always secretly wished to live more simply and actually touch the world around you, then that's reason in itself. For me, the book is deeply personal for several reasons. My high school graduating class split into two major groups. Some went to Evergreen State College with eyes on forestry degrees. Others went to UW and got business degrees. I did the later. And I don't regret it.But I have spent a lot of time in the area Pamela describes and share the deep spiritual connection with the land that she so elegantly reveals in this thoughtful memoir. In fact, I had an opportunity to choose to live in the Hell's Canyon area or Seattle. I just couldn't get comfortable with the harsh climate and lack of infrastructure. I chickened out and stayed in Seattle.Pamela made what for me was the hard choice. And this book clarifies why it was the perfect choice for her. I rejoice in her appreciation of the world around her and ability to embrace it fearlessly. And to overcome the pain of loss...the cider story made me weep. The challenges she's faced as a woman also resonate. Our generation navigated the confusing and frustrating escape from our mom's traditional life boundaries to today's better-but-not-perfect balance of power between male and female roles. Her attitude and sturdy resolve as she grapples with role stereotypes mirror what many of us have tried to achieve with our dignity and identities intact.

Nearly 13 years ago my husband I and spent part of our honeymoon camping trip to Wallowas, Eagle Cap, Imnaha Valley and Hells Canyon. There’s something unique and special there and I couldn’t ever describe it in a way that did it justice – that turned out to be Royes’ job. She describes the land in a way that engages all 5 of your senses – just like you’re there. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I reached for the cider jug too (you’ll know EXACTLY what I mean when you read Temperance Creek). Two things about her book have had immediate effect on my life – I made a batch of sourdough starter and I regularly order a biscuit with “a tidal wave of butter and jam” in restaurants. I also mentally checked out of my livingroom each time I sat to read leaving my husband and 2 boys to fend for themselves – I was busy herding sheep with Pam and Skip. Royes’ memoir is about her life as she trusted herself, the land to provide, the people around her (or wisely not trusting them in some cases) and accepting that life is a journey. Her life was a result of her willingness to make decisions about what felt right, listening to her heart and then forging forth accepting the good with the bad in the scope of the bigger picture. It blew me away. Royes’ knew she was bucking against her upbringing, her faith and maybe her better judgment – but she wanted what she wanted (Skip) and went for it. When it got tough, she hung in there knowing not everything always goes the way you want it – but you can decide in large what you want and accept the pitfalls along the way. She tells of an observation that Skip made early on in their relationship – that with all the interrupted time they’ve spent together – no distractions like phones, cars or job – their relationship is further along than most. That’s compelling – that people who are together and depending on each other nonstop for basic needs and survival (honestly – it was that dire in some cases in their life in the canyon) form a life lasting bond in a rather short period of time. Perhaps that rang a little bit also in when Skip talks about his service in Vietnam and some of the men he was with, I know I’ve heard my dad say similar things about the men he was with there.Temperance Creek is also about how people, animals and land work together. There’s obvious gripes in here about government land management and I briefly (very briefly) thought maybe there was some insight here into why the Bundy’s helped organize a standoff with federal lands in Southern Oregon. After all, some of Pam and Skip’s friend’s lost their lifestyle because of government land leases and regulations. I’ll just say that the Bundy’s made poor choices how to handle it – no need to get into Malheur here. What makes Royes’ memoir special and unique is that while her journey and life in the canyon with Skip was an amazing adventure – it is her and Skip’ spirit, not the land, that makes everything special.

Horses, pack horses and mules, rugged country, ornery loner bachelor sheep herders, sour dough starter, dogs, sheep, and more sheep, privilaged city dude guests at Red's, and the challenges of such rugged, beautiful and wild country. I am ever so thankful she shared her story of this time of wildness that has pretty much disappeared in this day and age. Wow. Thank you Pamela. I made this book last as long as I could. Like I do with a good bar of dark chocolate. And I kept finding the creeks, homesteads, view points and marking them on my map of the Willowas and Hells Canyon. I also gave this book as a Christmas present to my mom, who was born to a homesteading family who were also sheep herders in SE Idaho.

Beautifully written memoir. Presents an engaging narrative of the author's life involving challenges and accomplishments associated with choosing an unconventional life in canyons and mountains around the Snake River's Hells Canyon. She takes a chance for adventure with a man who becomes her life-long partner, endures rugged and primitive living conditions, works hard, learns valuable life skills, and finds long-term fulfillment in family life. The composition is superb. The feelings and events are lyrically expressed. Her grandchildren should treasure this work and bless her name.

I found the story line somewhat intriguing. I'm not entirely sure it's worthy of a book, but it's interesting. The style of writing is overly descriptive. The author will dedicate an entire paragraph to describe one particular thing, each sentence worded slightly different than the prior one. This caused the book to be much longer than it needed to be without bringing anything additional to the table with regard to intellect or enlightenment. The last couple of chapters felt a little preachy when she found God. Secular readers may struggle with this. Lastly, Skip is a real-life character you love to hate in this book. How does one decide which child you abort and which you keep, this is a strange man, if you can call him that. 3 out of 5 stars.

Review

Scientific American's Cocktail Party Physics blog“It's clear, insightful, and designed for those hardcore physics fans who've read all the popular treatments and now might be interested in moving out of the armchair into the real action of actually engaging in theoretical physics.”Science Blogs: Built on Facts“[A] charming and erudite instance of a genre with very few members – a pop-physics book with partial differential equations on a good fraction of the pages…. More impressive still is that the book entirely resists the temptation to skip to the good stuff – quantum mechanics and so on. This is a book which is purely about classical mechanics…. [S]ucceeds admirably in its goal. It presents classical mechanics in all its glory, from forces to Hamiltonians to symmetry and conservation laws, in a casual but detailed style.”Physics World“Very readable. Abstract concepts are well explained….[The Theoretical Minimum] provide[s] a clear description of advanced classical physics concepts, and gives readers who want a challenge the opportunity to exercise their brain in new ways.”Wall Street Journal, Best Books of 2013“Every minute of our lives is now dependent on technology, yet the wonders of basic science are foreign to many of us. Everyone who remembers even a bit of math should read this inviting and accessible account of ‘what you need to know to start doing physics.'”Wall Street Journal“So what do you do if you enjoyed science at school or college but ended up with a different career and are still wondering what makes the universe tick?.... Leonard Susskind and George Hrabovsky's The Theoretical Minimum is the book for you. In this neat little book the authors aim to provide the minimum amount of knowledge you need about classical physics…to gain some real understanding of the world…. They do so with great success…. Along the way you get beautifully clear explanations of famously ‘difficult' things like differential and integral calculus, conservation laws and what physicists mean by symmetries…. Messrs. Susskind and Hrabovsky's book is a powerful exposition of why science is ‘real' and a counter to the kind of wishful thinking employed by people who, for whatever reason, reject the scientific worldview.”Physics Today“A pleasure to read….a beautiful, high-level overview of the entire subject.”

Beautiful book. Worst typesetting I have seen in a kindle book in a long time, and I am reading it on my computer after thinking it was just my device. The equations are clip art (you can see the tops or bottoms of text below it) because the typesetters can't use latex. Excuseable, but the worst part is the inline equations have this much space between each letter. Returning it half way read so I can buy a paper copy. Sad!

This "The Theoretical Minimum" series is one of a kind. It bills itself as text book for the self learner. Unlike a dumbed down popular science book this is the real deal - seeks to explain the world via mathematics, in the same manner a physicist does. But unlike a text book it doesn't teach by repetition and exercises. Nor does it assume you have taken the appropriate pre-requisite maths course.Instead it takes you step by step through the whole through whole box and dice. Don't know calculus or maybe you've forgotten your trig identities? Don't worry - it's covered in the just enough depth to understand what follows. It's done without jargon and in a very readable tone, with the more difficult topics covered from several angles so you have a hope of gaining the insight needed from one of them. And it's done with the insight and understand of a man who is not only of the the leading experts in his field, he's also been teaching it for years. Given the topic it isn't easy going. Trying to get my head around things that weren't covered in high school physics when I did it is a struggle - like why the Lagrangian could possibly work. But it is possible, and with the pleasant tone of the book even pleasant. In this day and age where one could potentially teach yourself in our newly connected world, this is the only series of books I've come across that delivers on the promise. For now it is one of a kind. Now Susskind has shown how it is done I hope we will see more.

This 220 page 6 x 8.5 little text is packed with valuable nuggets, and does NOT shy away from advanced math. This book is based on the popular Stanford, online and YouTube "adult ed" lectures and is targeted at scientists and "amateurs" who missed physics in undergrad but are still interested.NOT a "popular" physics book with a bunch of fluffy, non substantial speculation about membranes, stings, fractals, superpositioned states and multiple universes! Has real, tough, solid content with a LOT of advanced formulas, including tensors and many partial derivatives. You CAN "get" these with supplemental study, but the pace of the 11 lectures included is fast enough to leave you behind very quickly if you're rusty in math.I teach ordinary differential equations to non engineers at classpros dot com, including Psychologists interested in the latest progress in nonlinear dynamical systems as applied to neurons, behavior, etc. This book is a real GEM as an intro to those topics, without "dumbing down" the content for a "lay" audience. If you love reading populist texts on quantum physics, etc. this wonderful book will take you all the way from classic upwards, with the requisite math, and will provide a great foundation for really getting what's going on in the more advanced areas. Unfortunately, the math will scare lots of folks off, but please, don't be one of them! The 11 lectures included are: 1. Classical Physics, 2. Motion, 3. Dynamics, 4. Multiple Particle Systems, 5. Energy, 6. Least Action Principle, 7. Symmetries and Conservation, 8. Hamiltonian Mechanics, 9. Phase Space Fluid and Gibbs-Liouville, 10. Poisson Brackets, Angular Momentum, Symmetries, 11. Electric and Magnetic Forces. There also is an appendix on Central Forces and Planetary Orbits and "math interludes" on Trig, Vectors, Integrals and PDE's. NOTE that only classical mechanics are covered here, HOWEVER circular motion and momentum are covered, and if you've seen the "Feynman" approach to QED (QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter), you know that even advanced Physics grad students were astonished that Richard was able to use "clock metaphors" and circular momentum to explain Quantum math and mechanics that normally take a grad student 3 years to master!Nothing is covered in a LOT of depth, for example there's little on computational complexity, but the theory of information conservation is touched on briefly as the "most fundamental of all physical laws" -- the cyclic "memory" of where we start and end!The REALLY COOL thing is that the authors don't talk down to us, they assume that just as "amateurs" can discover new stars in Astronomy, non-college types can also make great new contributions in Physics! No fooling, no tongue in cheek. Seems like a revolutionary view from Stanford types, but perhaps they've seen the future of distributed, non-brick and mortar education for real! At under 20 bucks this is a MUST HAVE even for HS students in my humble opinion. GREAT GIFT for a bright grandchild for their 18th birthday as well! This is such an original math refresher too, that I'm guessing a lot of folks will also use it to brush up on applied math. By page 60 we're already at differential equations-- so hang on to your saddle!Library Picks reviews always buys the books we review and has nothing to do with authors, publishers or Amazon, our focus is exclusively on the ROI of Amazon buyers.

The rating above does not apply to the content of the book but rather to the presentation. The substance so far is very good but I'm not sure that whoever is responsible for the digital edition of this book actually bothered to review it before posting it for sale. Regardless of whether the reader is using an iPad, a Kindle, or a computer to read this volume they will require a magnifying glass to read the formulae as the font appears to be either 5 or 6 point size. The typesetting generally leaves much to be desired with large gaps in the text spacing that exist for no fathomable reason. After almost 1000 purchases I have never returned a digital book to Amazon but am seriously considering it with this one.The publisher - Basic Books - should be panned for this effort. Amusingly, the back of the title page states that the book was typeset using Mathematica. I have Mathematica and I've never seen the application produce such poor renditions of formulae. If there was an option to acquire the volume in an nb file format (Mathematica's notebook format) at least I could read it on my computer!

Ebook version is totally unreadable on an actual Kindle. There are mathematical formulas everywhere and they are completely illegible with no way to zoom in that I can find.It does look great on my PC and is almost readable on a Fire 10" tablet, so if that's your thing then you're probably safe.Would prefer to have gotten a refund on my purchase, but missed the seven day window by a couple of days. No comment on the actual book, except that what I did manage to read looked very informative.

This work covers the basics in a manner that makes it easy to move on to more advanced topics. For those of us who had more "practical" introductions to Physics it is very enlightening. It should be of interest to anyone who was introduced to the subject a few decades ago. It does require a level of mathematics that puts it out of the reach of most casual readers, but as the authors point out, there are many people with technical backgrounds who will benefit from this approach.

Review

"If we are to bring more peace to our planet, we need to replace punishing those who've caused harm with communications that foster compassion and healing. In this wise and beautiful book, we bear witness to how this is unfolding in highly diverse communities across the globe. Thank you, Jarem, for sharing these invaluable illustrations of our human potential."-TARA BRACH, bestselling author of Radical Acceptance"Healing Justice is essential reading for this moment in history. Through captivating real-life stories, Jarem Sawatsky deftly shows us that if we take the time to learn about our own humanness, justice can be transformative. In this time of reconciliation, he demonstrates how communities do not need to wait for governments to create communities rooted in healing, justice, truth and reconciliation."-SENATOR MURRAY SINCLAIR, former Chair of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada 2009-15"...reflections of a deeply curious human being who wonders if there might be better ways for all of us to behave towards each other."- RUPERT ROSS, national bestselling author of Return to the Teachings"Jarem Sawatsky discovered in his brokenness a Muse and Angel that guided his life work and inspired this beautiful book. His central insight is that healing justice are two words joined together like two faces on one body. You heal yourself and your world by means of your illnesses and injustices. This is one of those books you wish everyone would read and keep and meditate on." -THOMAS MOORE, New York Times bestselling author of Care for the Soul

I have now read from Dancing Elephants to Healing Justice and it all seems right. As a body with a chronic condition of long standing, I am grateful for good health care, but just as grateful for good spirit care. These books are guides and exemplars. My thanks..

Very well researched and very accessible to all

Liked it very much. Personal enrichment.

I received an ARC of this book. I am leaving an honest reviewThis was an interesting book. I had not heard of Healing Justice concept before this book. I had the concept he refers to when I read his last book, 'Dancing With Elephants'. He used the concept of circles in helping with his disease.Healing Justice is a concept that the person who is taken advantage of needs healing and so does the the one who did the crime. The author takes on the concept by visiting three different communities. Each one approaches the concept from their own point of view. Each one has had their own way of implementing it.While I understand the concept I do have problems with how it can be truly implemented in the life of people today. While our society may be the problem, it is hard to move the ship while it is going strongly in one direction. I also understand that the abuser is in need of help as much as the one who receives the abuse, but sometimes an abuser is just that, an abuser, and there is not a clear way to reach them. The book tends to read like a text book in parts. I understand from the forward that these were published as part of his college classes so that may be the reason.Safe for all to read but as specialized as it is I do not think many of my circle of friends might be interested.

Jarem Sawatsky has written a book for our time touching on the topics of relationships, conflict, grief and healing; basically much of the human experience.Jarem shows his readers three different communities that are alternatives to the problematic norms and beliefs of dominate culture. Healing Justice is built on the premise that there is brokenness in people and brokenness in the ethos that forms our civilizations, but it has deteriorated the human ability to build and maintain healthy relationships. However, the communities’ stories we hear from in this book model ways of being and relating that are healing; ways in which peace is not an end objective, but a way of doing life together and belonging to each other. In an age where we deconstruct and forget to reconstruct, this shows the process of doing such a rebuilding in all its complexities.Healing Justice comes from an academic version the author had previously written, but the goal here was to make a version accessible to all audiences, which he does well. It is also worth noting that his research is not just a disconnected intellectual project, but it does draw from his personal struggles as-well-as from the time he spent with each community observing and learning from them. This book is definitely worth the read and at least a re-read as there is much to glean from their stories.

In the face of great turmoil and pain in the world, Mr. Sawatsky introduces us to present-day enclaves of true community -- people who have chosen a compassionate response to justice within their memberships. It is exciting to learn that examples already exist of healing and restoration in the face of evil. Yet the cultivation and sustenance of true community is definitely the underlying requirement to this model. We have proof that it CAN happen. Do we have the will to MAKE it happen?

The book takes you on a trip to see and feel what healing and justice can look like when lived out in fullness, both at a personal and community level. Swatasky's vulnerable telling of his own story weaves together powerful images and lessons from some of the communities who most embody the intersection of healing and justice. After reading the book, I feel more trust that healing is possible, for us together, and for each of us individually.

Well researched and thoughtful overview of healing justice in three communities around the world. This quote aptly illustrates both the approach of this book and the author's own life and practice: "Healing is a life-long journey, not a therapy but a way of life."

Eliza's Cherry Trees: Japan's Gift to America

From the Inside Flap

Eliza Scidmore was a remarkable woman. Adventurous and talented, she traveled around the world visiting interesting places. She wrote about her travels for newspapers and magazines, including the National Geographic Society magazine, where she was the first female writer and photographer. She published seven books, including the first guide to Alaska. After seeing the parks and riverbanks in Japan, she fell in love with the cherry blossoms there. They formed pink clouds around everything and were so beautiful that she wanted to bring them back to America. Her hometown of Washington, D.C. would surely benefit from these lovely trees. However, not everyone shared Eliza's vision-certainly not the parks supervisors. She met with every one of them, year after year, to explain her idea. When they didn't listen, she asked Helen Taft, the president's wife, for help.It took more than twenty years for Eliza's cherry trees to become part of Washington, D.C.'s landscape. But thanks to her determination and love of Japan, residents and visitors to the nation's capital can appreciate these beautiful trees.Andrea Zimmerman has written eleven children's books, including Trashy Town, an ALA Notable Children's Book. She has a degree in fine arts for children and a doctor's degree in dental surgery. Zimmerman resides in San Diego, California.Ju Hong Chen is a self-taught artist who grew up in Communist China. Purposely avoiding the "official line" training of China's art schools, he worked as an art designer in a factory. He moved to the United States in the 1980s, and his first picture book, The Magic Leaf, was named a Parents' Choice Honor Book for illustration soon after his arrival. His first book with Pelican, The Jade Stone: A Chinese Folktale, received a starred review from Kirkus and was named a best picture book by the San Francisco Chronicle and Book Links. Chen resides in Beaverton, Oregon.

Eliza Scidmore probably wouldn't get an inch of copy in today's media, filled with tales of young women who pose nude and are famous for being famous. So this charming book telling the story of the persistence of the woman responsible for bringing cherry trees to the nation's capitol is much needed in these troubled times to help inspire millions of young women to make a difference rather than just express some vapid dream of being famous for wearing the latest designer fashions. Zimmerman's story is beautifully illustrated by Ju Hong Chen. The story told in Eliza's Cherry Trees harks back to a time when values mattered, character counted and many women did in fact make a difference in their corner of the world. It's a beautiful gift to young women who could use a valuable role model like Eliza Scidmore.

Eliza Scidmore loved to travel. From the time she was little and her mother took her to Europe, she dreamed of adventure and excitement in other lands. Woman had few options at this time (mid to late 1800s), but Eliza refused to let that stop her. She went to college and developed her writing skills. She wrote numerous newspaper articles and a couple of books. She traveled to Alaska, Japan, and Europe. She visited India, China, Russia, and Indonesia. But she especially fell in love with Japan, its people, its food, and its cherry trees. When she returned home after her first visit to Japan, she looked at the muddy riverbanks of Washington D.C. and got a wonderful idea. Wouldn't some of those Japanese cherry trees with their beautiful blossoms look great there. Eliza took her idea to the man in charge of the Washington parks, he declined. Over a span of twenty years, Eliza kept going back, every time someone new was placed in charge of the parks, but they all said no. Finally, she took her idea to Mrs. Taft, the wife of then President Howard Taft. Mrs. Taft loved the idea. The Japanese were more than happy to share their trees. Unfortunately, the first batch of trees were diseased and had to be destroyed. But the second batch was perfectly healthy and the beautiful cherry blossoms have been enjoyed by many since then. This is a great story of persistence in the face of many difficulties. Eliza had a good idea and she wasn't going to give it up. Zimmerman let's us see the difference that one person can make. The pictures of the blossoms are gorgeous and Chen does a fine job of showing Eliza through the years of changing fashions. He also offers us rather faded pictures of the places Eliza travels to, almost as if to say that those places couldn't be fully appreciated without being there, which is undoubtedly true. The pages showing the blooming cherry trees are definitely the highlight of the book with the bright colors and serene landscapes. The writing is clean and crisp and moves the story along at a brisk pace, which Eliza would surely appreciate. A nice book for reminding all of us just how connected we really are.

A lovely story about how cherry trees made their way to nation's capital. Text is wordy, so not a great "bedtime" read for younger kids; however, a nice conduit to foster a discussion generally

Beautiful and informative.

Great true story - inspirational for young girls. I never knew who was responsible for the cherry trees in Washington DC

Very nice book! I purchased for my granddaughter.

I thought the illustrations could have been done a lot better, so in that respect I was disappointed. I really should have done more research into the books avalilible but I was short on time. This was a gift and i would recomend looking at all of the books on the Washington cherry trees before you decide and purchase one.

A nice biography and engaging telling of a little-known story. It shows Eliza's groundbreaking adventures and her perserverance in bringing cherry trees to DC.

In the midst of the worst disaster to strike Japan since World War II, it's somehow poignant to recall, through this new picture book, an early gesture of friendship between the two countries: Japan's gift of cherry trees to the nation's capital. But do you know the story of how that gift came about? Andrea Zimmerman's book tells the story of a remarkable woman, Eliza Scidmore, who in the late 19th century, led a life of high adventure, writing about her travels all over the world for a variety of magazines and newspapers, including National Geographic, where she was the first woman journalist. She was a photographer as well, and took pictures for the Smithsonian. She even wrote the first guidebook to Alaska. But she particularly fell in love with Japan and its people, studying Japanese art and learning to speak the language. Especially struck by the beauty of Japanese gardens, she called their cherry trees "the most beautiful thing in the world."When Eliza returned home to Washington, she came up with the idea of planting these special trees in the nation's capital. For years her plans met with plenty of "no's" from Washington bureaucrats; it wasn't until she got the support of the president's wife, Mrs Taft, however, that the trees could be sent. It wasn't an easy process--the first trees that arrived were diseased, and had to be burned. Three thousand new trees were sent, however, and were finally planted in March of 1912. [In 1965, 3,800 more trees were accepted as a gift by then First Lady Lady Bird Johnson.]The trees not only beautified the city, they became an important symbol of peace and friendship between countries. A famous National Cherry Blossom Festival draws thousands of visitors each spring in Washington. As part of a number of projects underway to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the original gift, the National Park Service will be sending cuttings from the original trees to the Japan Cherry Blossom Association to be planted in Japan (see article in The Japan Times). The book features lovely illustrations by Chinese artist Ju Hong Chen. Back matter includes a timeline, with further biographical details about Eliza Scidmore. An attractive website has also been set up on Scidmore, with a teacher's guide and other resources relevant to the book.
