I received my copy of this book in the 80's… Mom mom had hers from the 60's, and Grandma had one, too. My spriral-bound treasure was starting to fall apart from years of use, so I was excited to see this reprint. Upon its arrival, I was very disappointed to find that it is not spiral-bound like earlier editions. I would have taken it to be rebound if only the centre margin was left wide enough for a binding. *sigh* I dragged out my tried-and-true copy, the one with the pages falling out, and started using it again.

I HAD ONE OF THESE COOK BOOKS THAT MY NANNY GAVE ME WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER AND IT HAS BEEN SO WORN OUT AND PAGES FALLING OFF AND I HAVE HAD A WAR WITH MY DAUGHTERS TRYING TO KEEP IT IN MY HOUSE. LOL WELL I GOT IT BACK AND FOUND NEW ONE'S SO I CAN GIVE THEM BOTH ONE OF THERE VERY OWN. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THIS COOK BOOK FOR YEARS AND HERE IT IS SO GREAT TO FIND IT. THIS IS SO WELL WORTH IT AND THE SMALL TIME I HAD TO WAIT FOR IT. I LOVE THIS BOOK AND YOU WOULD TO IF YOU LOVE TO COOK OR BAKE THINGS ... SO MANY GREAT RECEIPIES SUCH AS THE BANANA NUT LOAF YOU WILL LOVE IT.

I have loved this book for years and pretty much learned to cook from it as a teenager. Finally found it again after decades. Best bread recipe ever in here.

I bought it to replace the one my Mom had given me about twenty years ago. Mine was so dog eared that many pages were missing. My daughter wanted the book so I decided to see if it could be replaced. I only wish it were larger since my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

My mother used the Five Roses cookbook when I was a child and I don't think she ever replaced it.The pages were covered in splatters from our attempts to bake, preserve and cook. She actually adapted many of the recipes to use in her small bake shop that she had for a lot of years. I still have that book but now many of the pages are missing and the ones that are there are hard to read. It was no decision at all to replace that book for my own children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren. I know it will become a family heirloom for them and anyone that uses it!

I had this book many years ago and lost it-at that time it was given free and I gave to my Mom, sisters, excellent recipes.

I have the original five roses cook book but it has seen better days from lots of use. A lot of my Favorite pages are now loose in the book as they tore off. So I wanted to replace it. I found that the new book does not have all the recipes, the ones that I loved of course. I wish I could get the exact book. So, I would rate it 3 1/2 stars because of this

When it comes to journals, I thought I’d seen it all: Mindfulness journals. Journals for book lovers to track their reading progress. Gratitude journals. Journals with prompts. Collage journals. Journals shaped like ice cream sandwiches. Enter: journals for the preschool set.Even though, at thirty-eight, I’m well past the target audience, I decided to give Me: A Compendium a try. After all, I love unconventional journals, journals with a heavy graphic element that don’t require so much writing (because who has the time? And also the handwriting skills? Mine jumped the shark shortly after college graduation.) And if it wasn’t for me, I could always give it away.As it turns out, when the publisher says that it’s intended for preschool through third grade, they are not kidding. And that’s a good thing!With its simple style; bold, bright colors; blocky artwork; and age-appropriate prompts/activities, this is a journal that’s both fun and very do-able for younger kids. The layouts are silly yet engaging, with plenty of space to write, draw, or even paste on your response. The paper is nice and thick, which is great for less than perfectly coordinated hands.The prompts run the gamut, from “If I were an underwater sea creature, this is what I would be” to “My favorite holiday” and “These are my top three ice cream flavors.”Okay, on second thought, maybe this book is just my speed.There are even some goodies hidden under the dust jacket, including a blank cover for the journaler to personalize herself.This would make a great gift for a creative or introspective kid, especially one who loves assisting with mom or dad’s scrapbooking (but maybe can’t be trusted with the glue and glitter quite yet!).** Full disclosure: I received a free book for review through Blogging for Books. **

This little journal by Wee Society is quite fun and unique. It is ideal for artistic, creative, and/or right brain dominant children and is described as "a fill-in journal for kids." I think it could be beneficial for older children and even adults with developmental delays or handicaps as well. The print on the inside is all very large and should be appropriate for anyone with about a second-grade reading level or higher. The bold colors and imaginative prompts are sure to appeal to a wide variety of personalities.Some of the pages encourage the reader to draw or sketch, but never in a way that should cause them to feel their artistic ability is lacking. For example, one page says, "If I could have any pet, it would be a ___________ ." There is a picture of a leash leading to a collar where the person can draw an animal in. Another drawing prompt page says, "This is my favorite thing to do inside" with a picture of a blank house to draw in. The page opposite says, "This is my favorite thing to do outside" with a place to draw. So, none of the pages ask the reader to copy a drawing, finish the other half of a drawing, etc. Other pages are writing prompts, such as, "When my family is together, we like to" followed by a picture of lined notebook paper with large writing space for completing the thought. There are prompts asking what you'd name a band, what you wish was in your refrigerator, and what you would pack if you were going to outer space.There is a good variety of prompts, some more reflective, some about favorite things, some about dreams. I appreciated a prompt which asked what awards I would like to give someone as this could stir kids to think of good characteristics they see in those around them or good deeds they've witnessed. The dust jacket is removable and has more opportunities to journal inside of it. I think this is a practical choice since dust jackets don't always survive long when books are frequented by young kids and the actual hardcover underneath is fully colored and offers an opportunity for doodling and personalization.I think kids could enjoy this, handicapped or developmentally delayed individuals could benefit from its approach, and it would make a great gift item. Once it is filled out, it will be a fun piece of memorabilia for someone who may not have take the time to do a traditional journal, scrapbook, or photo album. This could even be incorporated into a young student's homeschool day before they are prepared for traditional writing prompts. It would surely be a highlight! My fourth grader snatched this and read through the whole thing, eagerly asking if he could complete it.In the interest of full-disclosure, I received a copy of this book courtesy of Blogging for Books for the purpose of reviewing. I was not required to give a positive review, my opinions are genuine.

My daughters ages 5 and 7 LOVED this journal. As a mom who wants to encourage my kids to write and express their feelings, this book was a great way to get them to do just that. The only problem with the journal is that my kids completed the entire book in about two days, they enjoyed the activities so much I had to beg them to stop writing and "save some for another day." My older daughter walks around with hers, reads and refers to it and even changes, adds or draws on pages she has already completed. I LOVE the creativity, expression of ideas and self awareness that this journal fosters.

Hard bound book is nice but would be hard for a child to actually open it up to write much- mostly because of the the binding. Pages are bright with illustrations, good kid ideas to write draw about. For some reason, I thought the book was bigger- the size combined with the illustrations takes up a lot of writing room.

My son is so excited to have a "book" he can make himself even though he is not a strong writer (K-1st grade). It has simple prompts which I can read to him and then he can do the page. For example, one page said, "My 4 favorite ice cream flavors are..." and then he is to draw them on the cone pictured on the page.

Exactly what I had hoped for. Great quality book, crisp pages, easy for my first grader to read & navigate. Lots to do inside, I think she’ll really enjoy it. Would buy again or give as a gift.

I love this book! It's a hard cover book with great illustrations and lots of fun questions. This is a great book to get your kid thinking about what they truly like. This will be an amazing keepsake that I know my daughter will enjoy looking through years from now. I highly recommend this - for the price, you can't beat it!

I got two of these for my grandkids age 5 and 7. They love them. They spend hours filling in the pages. The younger one mainly uses pictures to fill in the pages, but she also asks for help spelling. This is great for provoking creativity in emerging readers and writers.

About the Author

Ajanta Chakraborty was born in Bhopal, India, and moved to North America in 2001. She earned an MS in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia and a Senior Diploma in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance, to feed her spirit. Ajanta quit her corporate consulting job in 2011 and took the plunge to run Bollywood Groove full-time. The best part of her work day includes grooving with classes of children as they leap and swing and twirl to a Bollywood beat. Vivek Kumar was born in Mumbai, India, and moved to the US in 1998. Vivek has an MS in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas, Austin, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He has a very serious day job in management consulting. But he’d love to spend his days leaping and swinging, too. Our story We are co-founders of Bollywood Groove (bG), a Bollywood dance and fitness company for kids and adults. We started bG in 2008 in the Bay Area, California and then re-started it again in 2011 after we moved to Chicago. We barely knew a soul in Chicago but were overwhelmed by the warmth and support of our loving Chicago community who showed a very strong interest to learn about and experience Indian culture. We slowly built bG from 1 to 30+ classes per week. When we started our bG Kids! Program (ages 2-15) in 2011, we wanted our classes to be more than just dancing to popular Bollywood songs. We aspired to make our classes educational and to introduce our students to the rich and diverse culture of India in addition to learning a dance choreography. To this effect, we introduced CultureZOOM, an immersion into Indian culture, that is taught in each class via fun activities — storytelling, games, craft projects and mini-plays. CultureZOOM has been very well received! Kids (and even parents) are excited to learn more about India and its rich cultural heritage. Over the years we have refined our approach and continue to test the content in our classes. This book series is a way to share this content with a broader audience and we hope young readers will enjoy a glimpse into the beautiful cultural diversity that makes up India. In our spare time — who are we kidding? We have a two-year-old toddler. Dancing, running Bollywood Groove, writing books, and chasing our very rambunctious child is all that we can fit in a day!

If you're looking for detailed fighting stories, this ain't it. The book documents one 19 year old's journey through a dark period in time. Young, gungho, looking for adventure and believing he would be doing something good but discovering the reality of war. If you weren't there, you will feel like you were. Living like animals in the wild, suffering heat, rain, bugs, bad food while trying to not get killed. You will feel the transformation from "new ****ing guy" to "being short" and hoping you get out alive. You'll also get a feeling of what it was like to be "In Country" and then being thrust back into "the real world" along with the scars that War left on returning troops with little or no support to recognize and deal with PTSD.

I do a lot of reading about the 101st Airborne Division and this is an excellent story. He writes about his experience during TET 68 and how the battle was fought at the lowest level. I was surprised that he was transferred to the 199th Infantry Brigade close to the time that he was going to leave Viet Nam. If you want to learn about how the infantry operated in the 101st then this is the book for you.

AMAZING!!! This story has you engrossed in it from the first page. As I read it I kept reminding myself that these were true events and actually happened. The book is very well written and takes you on a journey with the soldiers. It gives enough detail to take you on the journey but not too much that it makes you uncomfortable. My dad served in Vietnam and would never discuss anything about it and by reading this book I feel like I know him a little better. I highly recommend this book.

The journey this father/daughter must have traveled together to produce this outstanding read had to have been at times gut wrenching, and at times presented a closeness that few ever get to share in life. Lori Stillman is extremely talented in presenting very difficult visual images of the conflicts her father endured through her words, it just engulfs you. Don't pick it up for a few minutes read, make sure you have the time for cover to cover - you won't put it down once you begin the journey with John Stillman.

I did not understand the war in Vietnam when it was happening. I wasn’t opposed to it. I wasn’t in favor of it. I just couldn’t make sense of it. John Stillman lived it in the worst possible way but he lived to tell about it. His memoir didn’t bring me to closer understanding of the conflict but it did make me feel it. Wonderful writing. Wonderful details.

How I wish I could them both, a man and his daughter so strong they could face the truth of facing war and death. A daughter helping a father, a father healed by his daughters love. This was his story of war, felt and written with his daughter. AMAZING A MUST READ

This well written account of John's year in Vietnam is at times enlightening and at other times horrifying. He grew up fast and developed and sixth sense to survive the brutal war we dumped our boys into. Lori deserves great accolades for teasing this noble tale from her reluctant warrior Dad. This is not your normal Vietnam Vet story, it stark honesty makes it a classic . Highly recommended.

I met John when I use to go to his house with my parents as a child. I remember thinking this is a man with a lot on his mind that didn't really say much. I knew later in life that he is a soldier who fought in Vietnam and began to understand that he really did have a lot on his mind. This story brings out a tiny glimpse of what it must have been like. This story makes you feel like you are right there experiencing it. I've always heard war is hell and hearing it from those who lived it makes you appreciate those who fight for our freedom even more. This is an amazing read and a book that is hard to put down. Thank you to those who've served. John's story shows what true heroes you really are.
